How the Question got its Mark charts the (mostly) true story of the birth of a Question Mark - Where did it come from? How did it get its hunch-back shape? Why is it even here? And just what is a Caret anyway?! We attempt to explain these, and more, as we reveal just how the Question got its Mark… . A Yankee Dodge
1 minute animation commissioned by The Old Operating Theatre Museum, London
This was a microshort commissioned for an exhibition at the museum including animations inspired by the collection. The story was loosely inspired by the first use of anaesthetic in the UK by renowned surgeon Mr Liston. He was renowned in his time and still remembered now in medical circles for various surgical firsts and feats of prowess. One of the chief amongst these is his being the first surgeon in England to operate on a patient anaesthetised using ether. The procedure was pioneered in the USA and for this reason, Liston is said to have referred to it as a ‘Yankee Dodge’ of the previous practice of conducting surgery on conscious patients. This film is a whimsical take on what might have happened when Mr Liston experimented in the use of ether before undertaking his historical operation... Directed and Animated by Charlie Tetlow Music by Tom Parker Voice of Liston: Paul McGuinness |
